Being an Active Listener at Work

Communication is not just about talking, it is about the act of sending an receiving messages. In fact, true communication happens when all persons in the conversation are engaged in uncovering and understanding the meaning behind the words. We are going to focus on the act receiving the message from the speaker, aka listening. But not just passively hearing words- we are talking about how to be an active listener. Otherwise, it’s just a bunch of chatter! And good businesses do not run off chatter for long.

Southern Marketing Team- Active Listener- Business Communication

If your business is based on building and keeping relationships, you need to understand how to be an active listener! Most people consider listening to be a passive or an automatic process that just happens, rather than as a business relationship skill that is essential.

The Southern Marketing Team encourages you to be better listener, specifically an active listener. An active listener redirects their focus from what is going on inside of their head to focusing on the needs of your person speaking.

Here are some quick tips you can apply to your communication skills to become an an active listener:

  1. Pay attention and paraphrase the conversation to ensure your understanding.
  2. Ask open ended questions and let the other person respond and explain.
  3. Use engaging body language during the conversation, like making eye contact, leaning in, and or nodding your head to show understanding.
  4. Minimize distractions around the conversation, like turning off your phone, radio, or tv.
  5. Keep yourself out of the conversation– (No one likes a one-upper).
  6. Keep an open mind about the conversation topic and do not jump to conclusions prematurely.

As a marketing firm, we have found that without listening, there is a true lack of understanding. So, by listening to people in and around your business, you can better understand your business needs and address them. Give our active listening tips a try and become an active listener.

Essential Business Event Planning Tips

Looking for ways to draw positive attention to your business, brand, or product offering? Hosting an event just might be the solution for your business. A well-planned event can create and generate the positive buzz your business, brand or product needs. Here are some essential event planning tips for your business from the Southern Marketing Team.

Partying with a Purpose is Essential

Make sure your business has a clear theme and message for your professional event. Communicating your business’ purpose for the event, product functionality, etc. is key creating memorable event and generating excitement. Maybe your business is celebrating a grand opening or a new product launch. Whatever the case, be clear on what your business is celebrating and stick to the theme. Once you have a clear message, that leads directly into who should attend your business event.

Stick to the Event Budget

Define your budget and stick to it! Work with your internal stake holders to define your event budget. Use spreadsheets or specific documents to track all pre-planned expenses.  As you begin planning, do not forget about the small essential details—they add up quickly too. Examples include trash removal, extra building security, beverages, catering, party favors, party theme decorations, table linens, chairs, microphone, stage, music, etc. Throwing a successful business event does not have be costly. However big or small the event, make sure your purchases reflect the professional event theme.

Planning the Business Guest List

Know your target audience! Think carefully, who you want and need to attend in order to define the event a success. Do you want the media to be there to create a “good news” public relation story? Do you need potential product users to attend or your business suppliers? Whomever your target audience is, make sure you give them plenty of notice to attend your business event. Because not only do you want to invite the right people, you want them to attend too.

Check Local Business Social Calendars

If you want people to be at your event, you must give them plenty of notice. Your business does not want to throw a “last minute event.” Your business event should be well promoted beforehand, create peer to peer, and social buzz. Make sure to check all known public social calendars in your area. You do not need your event to compete with the 49th annual gala that also draws your same target audience. Think carefully about your business, target audience and timing of your event before you send out or publish any information about your event.

All in all, these are just a few quick essential business event planning details you should consider. There are many more items that go into event planning and if you have questions about planning your next business event or if you need help, the Southern Marketing Team is here. We have more than a decade of event planning experience.
